Trump Frustrated After Putin Call, Plans Zelenskiy Talks Amid Ukraine War Tensions

Washington, July 4, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump expressed frustration after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, saying he saw “no signs” that Moscow intends to end its war in Ukraine. The call, which lasted nearly an hour, came amid rising violence in Kyiv and eastern Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters upon returning from a campaign trip to Iowa, Trump said:

“I’m very disappointed. I don’t think President Putin is ready to stop, and that’s too bad for everyone involved.”

The remarks followed reports of a Russian drone attack that set fire to an apartment building in northern Kyiv, while heavy shelling in eastern Ukraine killed at least five civilians, according to Ukrainian officials.

📞 Zelenskiy Call Planned as U.S. Weapons Shipments Pause

Trump confirmed he plans to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday. The discussion is expected to focus on a recent pause in some U.S. weapons shipments to Kyiv, a move that has sparked concern among Ukrainian leaders as Russia escalates its summer offensive.

While Trump denied a complete halt of U.S. military aid, he criticized his predecessor Joe Biden for overextending American stockpiles:

“We’re still helping Ukraine, but Biden gave away so many weapons that we have to make sure our own defenses are secure.”

The Pentagon’s decision has reportedly slowed deliveries of Patriot air defense systems—critical for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.

🕊 Moscow: Peace Talks Depend on Kyiv

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Russia remains open to dialogue but insists that “the root causes” of the conflict must be addressed—referring to NATO’s expansion and Western military support for Ukraine.

Notably, Trump and Putin did not discuss plans for a face-to-face meeting, and Moscow appears to resist any three-way negotiations with Washington and Kyiv.

🌍 What’s Next?

As the conflict drags on, Ukraine is urging Washington to resume full military support to bolster its defenses against intensified Russian attacks. Trump’s upcoming conversation with Zelenskiy may signal whether the U.S. will adjust its approach or maintain its current posture.
